TONG Shijun, born in September 1958 in Shanghai, is professor of philosophy and University Council Chairman of ECNU, member of the Social Science Committee of Ministry of Education, and vice chairman of Shanghai Federation of Social Sciences. Tong received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in philosophy at ECNU in 1982 and 1984 respectively. In 1984, he started his career as a philosophy teacher at ECNU. In 1991, he was granted an associate professorship. He was promoted to be a professor in 1994. In the same year, he received his Ph. D. degree in philosophy at University of Bergen, Norway. He worked as a vice president of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), and later also as the director of Research Institute of Philosophy of SASS form July 2004 to July 2011. He became Chairman of the University Council of ECNU in July 2011. Dr. Tong has published more than 10 books and over 100 papers in Chinese, English and some other European languages in his major research areas of epistemology, practical philosophy and social theory. Among Tong’s books in English are Epistemology and Methodology in the Post-Hegelian European Philosophy of 19th Century (Bergen, 1993) and Dialectics of Modernization: Habermas and Chinese Discourse of Modernization (Sidney, 2000).His major books in Chinese include Western Philosophy at the Times of Marx and Engels (co-authored,Shanghai,1994,2008), An Introduction to Philosophy (co-authored,Shanghai,1997, 2008), Critique and Practice: Essays on Juergen Habermas's Critical Theory (Beijing, 2007) , Spiritual Challenge in Contemporary China (Shanghai, 2017). He edited the books including West Learning in China: Reflections on 90th Anniversary of The May 4th Movement (2010), Spiritual Life in China Today (2009). Among his translations are Juergen Habermas's Faktizitaet und Geltung (Beijing, 2003,2011), Gunnar Skirbekk’s Timely Thoughts (co-trans, Shanghai,2007).
