Dr. Martin Brudermueller was born in Stuttgart in 1961. From 1980 onwards he studied Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and received his degree in 1985. After earning his doctorate in Karlsruhe in 1987, he did a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley, United States.
In 1988, he joined the Ammonia Laboratory at BASF AG, Ludwigshafen and later transferred to New Business Development/Marketing, Intermediates in 1993. In 1995, he became the Head of Marketing and Sales, Intermediates and Pharmaceutical Chemicals, BASF Italy. He served as Staff to the Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF AG in 1997 and two years later he became Director of Production, Fine Chemicals. In 2001, he became Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning BASF Group. In 2003, he became President, Functional Polymers, BASF AG, Ludwigshafen. In 2006, he became Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF AG (since January 14, 2008 BASF SE), responsible for the region Asia Pacific and based in Hong Kong. In 2011, he became Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE and he became Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in 2015 in addition. In May 2018, he became Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of BASF SE.
He also holds positions outside BASF SE in the following organizations: Fund of the Chemical Industry of VCI (German Chemical Industry Association); German National Academy of Science and Engineering; BDI (Federation of German Industries) and BDA (Confederation of German Employers’ Associations); Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science; International Council of Chemical Associations; VCI; Economic Advisory Council of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group in the German Bundestag; ERT-European Round Table of Industrialists; National Platform for the Future of Mobility; Hightech-Forum 2025.
