Director General, International Food Policy Research Institute International Organizations and Other Institutions
Dr. Shenggen Fan is world renowned for his work on transition economies, global food systems, and agricultural and rural development and has been director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) since 2009. IFPRI is arguably the world’s preeminent food policy think-tank, founded in the early 1970s to improve the understanding of national agricultural and food policies to promote the adoption of innovations in agricultural technology.
He is one of the Champions of Target 12.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilising action, and accelerating progress toward cutting global food loss and waste. He serves as a member of the Lead Group for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. He serves as advisor to many national governments (including China and Vietnam) on agriculture, food security and nutrition.
In 2017, Dr Fan received the highly prestigious Fudan Management Excellence Award, referred to in China as the “Nobel Prize for Management,” which recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of management. In 2014, Dr Fan received the Hunger Hero Award from the World Food Programme in recognition of his commitment to and leadership in fighting hunger worldwide.
