Martin Brudermueller

Incoming Chairman, the Board of Executive Directors & CTO, BASF SE Business Circle

Dr. Martin Brudermueller was born in Stuttgart in 1961. From 1980 onwards he studied Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and received his degree in 1985. After earning his doctorate in Karlsruhe in 1987, he did a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley, United States.


In 1988, he joined the Ammonia Laboratory at BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 1993, he worked with New Business Development/Marketing, Intermediates, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 1995, he became the Head of Marketing and Sales, Intermediates, Pharmaceutical Chemicals, BASF Italia Spa, Milan, Italy. In 1997, he served as Staff to the Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 1999, he became Director, production fat-soluble vitamins, Fine Chemicals, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 2001, he became Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning BASF Group, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 2003, he became President, Functional Polymers, BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen. In 2006, he became Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF Aktiengesellschaft (since January 14, 2008 BASF SE), responsible for the region Asia Pacific located in Hong Kong. In 2011, he became Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE, Ludwigshafen. In 2015, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany, responsible for the divisions Petrochemicals, Monomers, Intermediates, Process Research and Chemical Engineering, as well as Corporate Technology and Operational Excellence and BASF New Business. In December 2017, he was appointed as the Incoming Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE, effective in May 2018.


He also doubles the following positions outside BASF SE: Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e. V. (Federation of German Industries; BDI) and Bundesvereinigung der Deutschen Arbeitgeberverbände e. V. (Confederation of German Employers’ Associations; BDA), Berlin, Germany, Committee on Research, Innovation and Technology Policy (Representative of the German Chemical Industry Association, Verband der Chemischen Industrie e.
