Wong Kan Seng

Chairman, Ascendas- Singbridge Pte Ltd. Business Circle

Mr Wong Kan Seng is the Chairman of Ascendas-Singbridge Pte Ltd.  He also chairs the Advisory Council of the Temasek Foundation-Connects, CLG.


Mr Wong is a member of the INTERPOL Foundation Executive Board of Trustees, and the London Business School's Global Advisory Council.  He also chairs the Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship Council set up by the Lien Foundation.


Mr Wong retired as the former Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore in May 2011 after serving 26 years in the Singapore Government. His last appointment was as the Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister in charge of the Population and Talent Division in the Prime Minister’s Office. He was first elected as Member of Parliament in 1984 and was re-elected in six successive general elections. He retired from politics as a Member of Parliament in 2015.


Mr Wong has held Ministerial appointments in the Communications and Information, Community Development, Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Ministries.  He chaired a number of ministerial-level committees which coordinated work across several ministries, for example, on national security, Singapore population and talent policies, crisis management such as SARS and community engagement.


During his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Wong co-chaired the China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, the Suzhou Industrial Park Joint Steering Committee and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Joint Steering Council with the then PRC Vice-Premier. He also co-chaired the Qatar-Singapore High Level Committee with the State of Qatar’s former Heir Apparent.


Mr Wong was the Leader of the Singapore Parliament from 1987 to 2007, and the Deputy Chairman of the People's Association from 1992 to 2006.  Apart from appointments in the Government, Mr Wong was the Chairman of the Chinese Development Assistance Council from 1992 to 2004, and then as a Trustee from 2004 to 2012.   He was the Adviser to the National Transport Workers' Union from 1985 to 2012.


Before his political career, Mr Wong served in the Government Administrative Service and held appointments in the Ministry of Defence. In 1981, he joined Hewlett Packard, Singapore where he remained till January 1985, when he was appointed to political office.


For his contributions to the Civil Service and labour movement, Mr Wong was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 1976 by the President of the Republic of Singapore, and the Medal of Honour by the National Trades Union Congress in 1998. He received the London Business School Alumni Achievement Award in 2004.
